You've probably heard of plastic surgery, you may even know someone who has undergone a…
Just a few short years ago people went out of their way to deny having elective cosmetic or plastic surgery of any kind. They would hide from family and friends and use ‘creative’ excuses to explain away the transformation. Times have certainly changed, and many patients now eagerly share their rhinoplasty surgery and recovery journey with the world on Instagram, Facebook and other social media. In a world where appearance has become an important part of life, career and networking, it’s no surprise that all pervasive social media is fuelling the trend.
A recent survey completed by five hundred patients and 128 plastic surgeons revealed that 95% of patients researched information online prior to consulting a real surgeon. Almost half the patients used social media such as Instagram to gather knowledge. In fact, some rhinoplasty patients are so excited they are documenting every step of their journey, and are closely monitored by thousands of followers.
A second survey carried out in 2014 by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery revealed a similar trend. Around 33% of doctors noted an increase in patients who chose surgery due to dissatisfaction with their social media image. Rhinoplasty is now in greater demand than ever, as the social media that created negative self-image is also responsible for the acceptance and demand for elective cosmetic and plastic surgery. A huge increase in patients under the age of 30 further discloses the impact of Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook on surgical choices.
“Rhinoplasty Diaries” are becoming a real trend, as Instagram users take us on a day by day account of the procedure and recovery. They usually begin with pre-operation photos and continue posting pics detailing the bandages and bruising, plus the excitement when revealing their new look. The rise of ‘selfies’ has also played a big part in the experience, although doctors caution that photos can often distort or amplify features when the reality is actually quite different.
The fact remains though, that many women (and men) are uncomfortable or even depressed by their online profile. This negative self-image can lead to a lack of confidence. Fortunately, rhinoplasty is an operation that provides life-changing results, and the procedure has helped countless patients attain their goals. Instagram allows patients to connect with others in the same situation, providing support and guidance. It’s always good to know you are not alone when undertaking surgery of any kind, and users connect through hashtags like #rhinoplastydiary and #nosejobbeforeandafter.
Many people believe they wouldn’t have considered rhinoplasty if it weren’t for others sharing the experience. Horror stories of failed surgical procedures, although rare, are often magnified in the press, creating doubt in the minds of potential patients. Although the best and most comprehensive advice is provided by duly qualified and experienced plastic and cosmetic surgery practitioners, there is also a need for young people to receive encouragement from their peers on social media.
According to Rachael Harman, a rhinoplasty patient detailing her experience on Instagram, “I think most people deny having plastic surgery because they probably do not want the attention and the questions…but I don’t want my surgeon to go unappreciated – he did a good job.”
Many plastic surgeons are qualified to perform rhinoplasty, but their degree of proficiency and qualifications vary greatly. Considerations include:
Dr Shahidi has all the above qualifications and more. He has received the highest attainments from the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS), and is a member of the Australian Academy of Facial Plastic Surgeons, with a primary interest in rhinoplasty surgery.
Dr Shahidi is a dedicated surgeon with a genuine desire to improve people’s lives.
Social media has its shortcomings, although it can be a valuable tool for initial research. However, it shouldn’t be seen as an alternative to a face-to-face consultation with a real expert. Results speak for themselves, and in the capable hands of Dr Shahidi, your future, both online and offline, has never looked so good.
