The term Otoplasty is derived from the Greek language and simply refers to any re-shaping…
Ear pinning, otherwise known as an otoplasty surgery, aims to reshape the outer area of the ear (pinna) in order to correct uneven or misshapen ears. This surgical reshaping may involve pinning back ears that stick out and improving overall facial composition by adjusting the ears to be more proportionate with the rest of the face. For many, an otoplasty is a way to aid self consciousness and anxiety, alleviating a lifetime of teasing and unkind remarks.
Ear pinning is a reliable, safe procedure with a high success rate and unlike other cosmetic surgeries, involves minimal pain and recovery time. Starting with a consultation, you will have a conversation with your surgeon about your medical history and they will then conduct an examination. A qualified surgeon like Dr Shahidi will listen to your goals and expectations, discuss your options and make suggestions — so together you can achieve the best outcome possible.
This quick and effective surgery requires general anesthesia.. Normally, most otoplasty procedures take about two hours and involve the use of stitches to heal the cartilage into the desired position. Sometimes an incision is made just behind the ear and a small amount of skin or cartilage will be removed. Usually, even if only one ear requires surgery, it’s encouraged to have the procedure completed on both ears to help achieve natural symmetry and composition.
The main questions we receive are enquiries regarding how much ear pinning will cost and if the procedure is able to be covered by insurance. Before you book a consultation, we suggest contacting your health provider to determine your level of health cover and giving us a call on 02 8080 0190 to discuss your options.
At most clinics in Sydney, an otoplasty is likely to cost around $7,000-10,000 in total. In Australia, the cost of ear pinning will depend on how much of the surgeon’s time is required, your specific needs, as well as what level of health cover you have.
When booking with Dr Shahidi, you will need to provide a $1000 deposit and then six weeks prior to surgery, the remaining amount will need to be paid. Other costs will include an anaesthetic fee which is able to be paid the day before your surgery and on the day of surgery, a hospital fee is required. While its results may be less effective, ears can be pinned back without surgery. Non-surgical ear pinning is more suitable for children, as their cartilage is softer and can retain the position. It’s also an attractive option as it doesn’t call for any incisions or anesthetic.
You usually are able to go home on the day of the surgery and will be provided with soft headband dressings, antibiotics and pain medication to aid your recovery. During the 24 hour period after the procedure, Dr Shahidi recommends resting with your head elevated up above your heart (to reduce swelling) and only consuming soft, easily digested foods. Localised pain and throbbing will decrease within the first week and the ears will be completely healed within a few months, leaving a barely visible scar.
