How to Manage Swelling After Rhinoplasty Surgery

How to Manage Swelling After Rhinoplasty Surgery

Rhinoplasty, or nasal surgery, involves reshaping or reconstructing the nose for either functional or aesthetic purposes.

Like any procedure involving soft tissue and bone, it can cause temporary swelling and bruising as part of the body’s normal healing response.

This article outlines general information on common postoperative care measures that may help support recovery and reduce swelling after rhinoplasty.

Why Swelling Occurs After Rhinoplasty

Swelling (oedema) is a normal part of healing after rhinoplasty.

The extent and duration of swelling vary between individuals and depend on factors such as:

  • Surgical approach (open or closed rhinoplasty)
  • Whether nasal bones were adjusted or fractured
  • Skin thickness and healing characteristics

When nasal bones are modified, temporary swelling may extend around the eyes and cheeks.

Most swelling subsides gradually over several weeks to months.

1. Keep Your Head Elevated

Keeping your head higher than your chest while resting can help reduce swelling.

This position encourages fluid drainage and may reduce facial pressure and discomfort.

Many patients find it helpful to use extra pillows or sleep in a semi-upright position.

Avoid lying flat, bending forward, or engaging in strenuous activities until your surgeon advises it is safe to resume.

2. Use Cold Compresses Carefully

Applying cold compresses during the first few days after surgery may help ease swelling and discomfort.

General guidance often includes:

  • Applying a cool, damp cloth (not ice directly) to the forehead or cheeks — avoiding pressure on the nose.
  • Keeping the compress in place for short intervals (about 20 minutes) followed by breaks.
  • Avoiding excessive moisture that could affect the nasal dressing or cast.

Always follow the instructions given by your surgeon, as postoperative care may vary between individuals.

3. Stay Hydrated and Eat Well

Adequate hydration supports normal healing.

Drink water regularly and limit caffeine and alcohol, as they can contribute to dehydration.

A balanced diet containing lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables provides nutrients for tissue repair.

Limiting sodium intake may also help reduce temporary fluid retention.

4. Rest and Allow Time for Recovery

Rest plays an essential role in recovery after rhinoplasty.

Taking sufficient time away from work and daily activities helps the body focus on healing.

Your surgeon will advise when you can gradually return to exercise and normal routines.

In most cases, visible swelling continues to improve over several weeks, though subtle refinement may take longer.

5. Avoid Alcohol, Smoking, and Certain Medications

Nicotine and alcohol can interfere with circulation and delay wound healing.

Patients are typically advised to avoid smoking and drinking alcohol before and after surgery.

Some medications and supplements — such as aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, and herbal products — can increase bleeding risk.

Always inform your surgeon of any medications you take so they can provide individual guidance.

6. Follow Postoperative Care Instructions, Including Nasal Taping

After rhinoplasty, the nose is often supported with a cast, splints and surgical tape.

These help maintain nasal structure, minimise swelling, and support the healing process.

Your surgeon will explain how and when to apply or remove nasal tape, how long it should be used, and when follow-up appointments are needed.

Adhering to these instructions is an important part of post-surgical care.

7. Avoid Excessive Nose Movement or Strain

Actions that increase pressure in the nasal area — such as sneezing, coughing, blowing the nose, or crying — can irritate incisions or increase swelling.

Using a humidifier and avoiding exposure to smoke or strong odours may help reduce irritation during early recovery.
