Overview
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that modifies the structure of the nose.
While it can be performed for cosmetic or reconstructive purposes, it is often undertaken to address breathing difficulties or to correct structural irregularities following trauma.
Over recent years, an increasing number of male patients have sought nasal surgery to improve nasal function or restore facial balance after injury.
Why Men Consider Rhinoplasty
Each patient’s reasons for seeking rhinoplasty are unique. Common motivations include:
- Post-traumatic repair: Nasal fractures from contact or high-impact sports can alter nasal structure or breathing. Rhinoplasty may help restore alignment and airflow.
- Functional concerns: Some men experience breathing obstruction from a deviated septum or internal collapse. Rhinoplasty can be performed in combination with septoplasty to improve nasal function.
- Congenital or structural differences: Certain nasal shapes or asymmetries may contribute to functional problems or dissatisfaction with facial proportion.
- Reconstructive goals: Previous surgery or injury may require secondary correction to stabilise the nasal framework.
It is important that each patient’s decision is based on personal needs and a realistic understanding of potential outcomes rather than external or societal expectations.
The Consultation Process
Before proceeding with surgery, patients are required to attend at least two consultations, including one in person with the operating surgeon.
A GP referral is mandatory under the Medical Board of Australia Guidelines for Cosmetic Surgery (2023).
During consultation, the surgeon will:
- Review your medical history and nasal function.
- Perform a physical examination and may use nasendoscopy for internal assessment.
- Discuss possible surgical options and limitations.
- Explain the risks, recovery process and expected healing time.
- Allow a minimum seven-day cooling-off period before any surgery is booked.
This process ensures patients have adequate time and information to make an informed decision.
Surgical Approach
Depending on the complexity of the nasal structure and goals, rhinoplasty can be performed using:
- Closed rhinoplasty: Internal incisions inside the nostrils with no external scar.
- Open rhinoplasty: A small incision between the nostrils (columella) to provide direct visual access.
The approach used will depend on the required structural modifications, such as repositioning cartilage, refining nasal bones or reinforcing internal support.
Rhinoplasty for men generally aims to preserve natural proportions and structural strength, maintaining the masculine contour of the nose while addressing any functional or reconstructive needs.
Recovery and Healing
- Initial recovery: Most patients experience swelling and bruising for one to two weeks.
- Return to work: Many can resume light duties after 10–14 days, depending on the extent of surgery.
- Exercise: Strenuous physical activity, including contact sports, should be avoided for at least six weeks or as advised by your surgeon.
- Full recovery: Internal healing can continue for 12–18 months before final results stabilise.
Risks and Possible Complications
As with any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries potential risks, which may include:
- Bleeding or infection.
- Scarring or delayed healing.
- Changes in nasal sensation.
- Breathing difficulty.
- Asymmetry or contour irregularities.
- Adverse reaction to anaesthesia.
These risks will be discussed in detail before surgery to support fully informed consent.
Selecting a Qualified Rhinoplasty Surgeon
When considering nasal surgery, patients should ensure their surgeon:
- Holds a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery.
- Has experience in both functional and structural nasal surgery.
- Operates in accredited hospitals or day-surgery facilities.
- Provides comprehensive pre-operative and post-operative care.
