Why Does the Nose Sometimes Feel Oily After Rhinoplasty?

Understanding Post-Rhinoplasty Skin Changes

After rhinoplasty, temporary swelling and changes in skin texture are common.

Some patients notice increased oiliness or a shiny appearance around the nasal area in the weeks following surgery.

This reaction is part of the normal healing process and usually resolves as swelling subsides and the skin barrier restores itself.

Why Does the Skin Become Oily After Rhinoplasty?

Several physiological factors contribute to this temporary condition:

  1. Sebaceous gland activity

The sebaceous glands naturally produce oil (sebum) to protect and moisturise the skin.

After surgery, these glands may temporarily overproduce oil in response to irritation, swelling or dryness around the surgical area.

  1. Healing and skin protection

During recovery, the body increases oil secretion to maintain skin hydration and protect the healing tissue from external irritants.

  1. Temporary hormonal fluctuations

Any surgical procedure can affect hormone levels, which may contribute to changes in skin oiliness.

  1. Pore blockage during healing

Dressings, splints and tapes applied during the first week of recovery can limit air exposure and trap natural oils, temporarily blocking pores.

Once the bandages are removed and normal cleansing resumes, the skin typically balances itself.

How to Care for Oily Skin After Rhinoplasty

While post-surgical oiliness usually improves with time, gentle skin care can support healing and comfort.

  • Follow your surgeon’s postoperative instructions. Your surgeon will advise when it is safe to resume cleansing and skincare routines.
  • Use mild cleansers. Once dressings are removed, cleanse the face gently with a non-active, fragrance-free cleanser. Avoid rubbing or applying pressure to the nose.
  • Avoid harsh exfoliants. Aggressive scrubs, pore strips or treatments that place pressure on the nose should be avoided for at least six months.
  • Moisturise and protect. Using a non-comedogenic moisturiser may help restore balance while protecting the skin barrier.
  • Delay facial treatments. Avoid facials, peels or other beauty treatments until cleared by your surgeon. Some mild chemical exfoliants may be safe after one month, but only under medical advice.
  • Consult your surgeon or dermatologist. If oiliness persists or is accompanied by irritation or acne, professional assessment ensures safe treatment choices.

Expected Duration

In most cases, nasal skin returns to its previous state within two to three months.

Mild oiliness can last longer in patients with naturally oily or thicker skin, particularly around the nasal tip.

This is part of normal recovery and does not indicate a complication.

Consultation and Medical Requirements

Before any cosmetic surgery such as rhinoplasty, patients must:

  • Obtain a referral from a general practitioner (GP) as required by the Medical Board of Australia’s Guidelines for Cosmetic Surgery (2023).
  • Attend two consultations, including at least one in person with the operating surgeon.
  • Observe a minimum seven-day cooling-off period before confirming a surgical date.

These steps ensure that every patient has adequate time and medical advice before deciding to proceed.

Risks and Considerations

All surgical procedures carry risks.

For rhinoplasty, possible risks include:

  • Bleeding or infection.
  • Temporary bruising or swelling.
  • Scarring (internal or external).
  • Changes in skin sensation.
  • Asymmetry or irregular contour.
  • Adverse reactions to anaesthesia.

Your surgeon will discuss these risks during the consultation process to support informed consent.
